birds have very specific wintering and breeding grounds. The warmer areas they go to in the winter may be a good food source during that time...but there may not necessarily be any habitat suitable for them to nest in come spring, so they head back to habitat and food souces on their breeding grounds.

Lets start with why they go south to begin with...its too cold in the north. Down south it is alot warmer. The birds fly back north for these two possible reasons. ONE; because it becomes too hot in the south for the birds TWO; it becomes winter there, and they fly back north for the same reason they went south to begin with.

Because there is an abundance of food for birds in the north in the summer months. The birds need to take advantage of this. If none of them went north in the summer, there would be lots of competition in the south and no competition in the north - a perfect situation for enterprising birds who are willing to fly north to have it all to themselves.

Most migrating birds are following a food source, Hobbies migrate to Africa because they hunt swallows and that's where the swallows go, swallows migrate to Africa because in Britain the insects they feed on hibernate and they know there will be plentiful in Africa also because it is too cold and wet in Britain to survive. the swallows then migrate back to England because the weather in Africa is too hot and dry to survive in and they know that insects are in abundance in Britain and the hobbies follow the swallows for more or let the same reason.
