In my experience the center, and about 15-30 rows away from the stage are the best seats.

Sitting on the sides is decent, but in some instances may block some props and actor animations.

Sitting too close can be too much to watch. Conversely, sitting far away can remove the expressions and enjoyment.

The ideal seats are where the tech table was when they put the show together. Usually center about 3/4's of the way back from the stage. This way you see it as the Director and the Lighting Designer imagined it.
If you go to a rock and roll concert, get a seat in front of the sound mixing board.
