The bill is from sky. I've asked for a copy, but no one has sent me anything. All I've been told is that I'm basically a liar trying to get out of a debt. what are my rights before and after baliffs get involved?

you have a right to know who the original debtor was. This may be a collection agency. Call them and ask them to send you proof before you pay.

If they are sending you a bill after 5 years then I would go to Citizens Advice Bureau as it could be a scam...be very careful, and even if it is from Sky, what took them so long? I'd say don't pay until they have provided you with definite proof you owe it, and then question them why it has taken so long.
I know what I'd do if they called me a liar...but I can't print that.
Good Luck!!!

They need to be able to send you a copy of the bill that shows which services you received, and when.

i would send them a registered letter asking them for the bill.

Put it back in thier court.

Just "not paying" is an option but to them it looks like you are ignoring the bill, so they will chase you.

You do say you've been given a bill, then you say you've asked for copy but they haven't sent you anything. are you perhaps saying you recieved the bill once but binned it ?

"freedom of information" act as quoted above does not apply to commercial organisations.

A bailiff can only be appointed if the judgement is found against you in a Court. Sky are unlikely to win a judgement from 5 years ago unless they have been asking you for the money since then, presumably you know whether or not you owe the money?

If you dont, then stand your ground

The question you have not answered is do you owe sky any money for services rendered five years ago or not ? If you do, then you should pay. If you are saying you do not owe this money, you will need some proof.

Why has it taken so long for this bill to come to light ? How much is it for ?

Baliffs will not be involded in this,as this is not a primary debt.

Refuse to pay unless they provide a proper account and proof of the alleged debt, without which no Court would expect you to pay.

A company can ask for a debt up to about 6 years old, after that it becomes a court matter i believe.....
Just keep demanding the original bill otherwise no way don't pay it, you want proof!!

DO NOT PAY THE BILL. Send a certified letted demanding a copy of the original bill....have someone sign for the letter. Also, in the letter, state that the company must CEASE AND DESIST in harrassment measures. This will cover you incase there is a court case.

THIS IS A SCAM!! This is a fairly new scam that I have been seeing pop up all over America. it's a bogus collection agency trying to collect on something you don't owe. I have also seen the scam where they will collect a debt owed to you. They tell you they have received payment, but you have to pay their fee up front first. It's amazing how good these cons are.

Don't pay it unless you know you owe it.

send them a certified letter asking for details of the bill. Send a letter to all three credit reporting agencies, saying it is "not a valid debt" and explain they will not send details to you about it. If it is on the credit report, they have to prove you owe the debt.

If it isn't on the credit reports, I wouldn't worry about it. If it is a legit debt, they should be able to explain it, rather than go to court.

Keep tabs on your credit report, as it can be reported any time.

Check into it before you pay. Most of the time creditors cannot collect after 7 years so check to see if you really owe the bill.
