I strongly recommend the book "Naked Playwriting" by Russin and Downs. It gives pointers on how to evaluate a story for its dramatic merit, how to structure a play so it moves forward, and how to market a play once you have it written. Not only is it the best playwriting book I've ever read, it is the best book on writing of any kind that I have in my collection.

Making a new work is all about 'process' before the final product.

Writing a play is all about the words spoken.

If you are in a town of any reasonable size, then there is probably a Reader's Theater group that you could join. There you will find some actors who sit on stools reading new scripts -- other writers and directors who will give you feed back and a chance to edit your work and come back to see how it flows.

Real big plays like Hamlet might have five acts with seven scenes in each act. That would translate time-wise to a feature film, I think.

To begin, though, I'd suggest writing a One Act play and try to get the local college to produce it. Perhaps as a student's thesis project or as a workshop. You can be there for the re-writes and edits and you can see the play evolve over a short time period.

Once that has been done you can build on it to make a larger work.

Look in to the copyright laws so you can keep a secure hand on your work. Document everything you do. And break a leg!

Get involved with a Community Theater. You may be able to have them produce your play. Producing can be expensive and one must be familiar with theatre production. Start writing your play. After you spend time some time at the theatre you can decide if they would have an interest in your play.

Just write it for its own sake, worry about whether its just for you or for sharing later on
