SIDS doesnt have causes because they havent figured out quite yet what triggers it. They are just starting to do tests and figure out that maybe babies that have died from SIDS had lower seratonin in their brains than normal babies. My brother died almost 8 years ago from SIDS and I hate when peopel say we found a way to cure or we found the cause. There are no proven causes or cures yet.

There was a study conducted that I read about in Mothering Magazine that said that SIDS was the mattresses that we put in our baby's beds the chemicals that the factory puts in them aren't good for the baby to breath and can kill them you can get natural mattresses yet they are more expensive but it's well worth it not to lose your baby.

I let people read this for themselves to see what they think. Anyway, go to www.babysake.com and then if you like do a Google search on a natural cures for SIDS. I found this stuff to be very interesting.

They say that it might have something to do with the brain. It happens more frequently in preemies so they think that maybe the part of the brain that will wake them up if they aren't breathing isn't working properly or isn't developed completely. They haven't been able to prove this yet though because it also happens in full term babies.

From what I've heard everyone is right. Something involving their breathing - it just stops all of a sudden and they're body doesn't take over like an adults does and start breathing for them.

It has causes; science just doesn't understand it all, yet.
The baby stops breathing and it appears that cribs are an added risk here, because babies evolved to sleep with their moms and to have their breathing regulated by hers.
Update on 10/31 - just saw a study about biological causes:

Well, there must be a cause or multiple causes, or there would be no effect. We just don't understand what those causes are.
