They don't
Some babies roll.
Some go straight from sitting to toddling.
If a baby is place on their stomach a lot, they're more likely to crawl before they walk. If they don't get a lot of "tummy time," they may skip the crawling phase and just start walking.

Most babies learn to crawl between the ages of 6 and 10 months. Your baby may opt for another method of locomotion around this time, though — like bottom shuffling (scooting around on his bottom, using a hand behind and a foot in front to propel himself), slithering on his stomach, or rolling across the room. Some babies skip crawling altogether and move directly to pulling up, standing, and walking. Since the "Back to Sleep" campaign was initiated in 1994, more babies seem to be crawling later or skipping it completely. (The campaign aims to reduce the risk of SIDS by encouraging parents to put babies to sleep on their back.) Don't worry about his style; it's getting mobile that's important, no matter how your baby does it.

Some babies walk way before they crawl. I'm a mother of 4 children, and 4 of them walked first. It's probably how you interact and play with them.

Some don't. Some kids start walking at 9 months, without ever crawling first. My sitter's first did that.

they don't have to... some babies actually do walk before they crawl... its definitly not common, but it does happen... also, some babies learn to sit up before they learn to crawl so they just scoot around on their butts instead of crawling...

Actually, some walk first...they say that's a bad sign though. (I don't believe that) I guess some Serial killers walked before they crawled. I don't think there is any connection though.

Supposedly it's suppose to help them out in the grand scheme of walking. Plus it's just a gradual, natural step they take before they get to walking.
