has anybody ever replaced a starter in a 2wd s-10. If so, is it something that i could do on my own? im not very mechanically inclined, so if its real difficult then i wont try. Also about how long do you think it will take? Thanks for the help

Yes, I have and they are easy. It will probably take an hour at most. There are usually just two bolts holding them on. Make sure you disconnect the negative battery cable before you do it.

Yeah, It's easy. Be sure to disconnect the negative battery terminal before you start the job. Depending on the year and engine size you are going to have two starter bolts holding the starter tot he block. Probably a 14mm socket on a 6" extension and a ratchet will work best for you. Have one hand holding that heavy starter when you are taking the last bolt out. You don't want it dropping. Then you will have a couple of wire connections on the starter. These may have plastic elctrical connectors but most likely you will have ring terminals that are connected to a threaded post on the starter/solenoid. Take them loose remembering how they came off and which post to put them on and then put the new starter back on in reverse order. Connect the negative terminal back and you should be good to go. You might need to shim the starter of it doesn't engage properly but I doubt it.

One last note. When you are theading the starter bolts back in be careful that they are in there pretty well. I have had them seem like they are in and really they were just holding in place by a the weight of the starter binding them. Once I shifted the starter the bolt fell out. If I wasn't holding the starter it could have dropped and caused damage. Oh, and a 6 inch starter bolt will destroy your tooth when it falls right into your mouth and hits a tooth. Be careful, that sucked for me.

Typically a starter is not difficult to replace. You just need to be sure you have the proper tools to do the job.

Here are step by step pictures and instructions on how to replace the starter motor for your vehicle:

Easy, two bolts, plus electrical connections. Hardest part is getting your hands and tools in the tight spots.
Should only take about half an hour.
Just remember where the electrical connections go.
