Sami knew that Lexi was having an affair with Tech. Sami really loved Lucas but knew that she didn't have a chance with him, so she figured Austin was the next best thing. Sami blackmailed Lexi and made Lexi tell Carrie that she and Austin shared a genetic marker that would probably cause them to have children with genetic abnormalities that could even be fatal. Sami said if Lexi didn't do this, she'd tell Abe about her affair.

Well, it started because Sami didn't want Carrie to get back together w/Austin. Sami wanted Austin to herself. So, she knew about Lexie's affair w/Tek and used that to threaten her. Sami told Lexie to say something that would deter Carrie from choosing Austin. On a whim, Lexie told Carrie a fib in which Austin & Carrie's genetic makeup when mixed together would cause severe birth defects. Knowing that Carrie wanted healthy babies, Lexie knew that this lie would cause Carrie to choose Lucus no matter what. Sami did not actually tell Lexie to say that line, but she did blackmail her into helping keep Carrie & Austin apart. That was basically it.
