I have a 1999 Honda Accord and lately the gears have not been shifting correctly. I took it in to the Honda Dealer to have it inspected and they advised me that I need a whole new transmission. Now my car is only 7 years old and in great condition and I find it hard to believe that I need a new transmission already. I use to have a 1991 Honda Accord and it is still running and i have not had to replace its transmission. I feel like the Honda Dealer is trying to take advantage of me because I am a lady. I could use some advice on what I should do in this situation. Does anyone Know much about the torque clutch converter and does it go that easily? Better yet, is my only option to replace the whole transmission? Any mechanics out there, I would truly appreciate your response.

Its called a torque converter. you can try to replace that. you can pick one up at your local auto parts store, but they most likely wont have it in stock. maybe a sensor is going bad or a valve in the transmission is sticking. the first thing i would do is have the transmission fluid changed. If that doesn't fix the problem then i would take it to a couple of regular mechanics. The dealerships are always ripping you off. See what they have to say in contrast with what the dealership said to you. most likely you wont have to replace the whole transmission. If all the mechanics tell you you have to replace the transmission then its most likely your transmission is shot and need to be replaced. Remember to ask the mechanics about the torque converter tho. If the transmission need to be replaced then have a regular mechanic replace it( will save you alot of money if a regular mechanic does it then the dealership). good luck

This is a very common problem and yes you do need a new transmission or a rebuilt one. We have replace several of them at our shop or sent the ones still covered under warrenty back to Honda to be replaced.
To replace one with a good honda unit is about $2600 here in arkansas.
To rebuild one (only use a Honda repair shop or a very well known rebuilder) costs about $1800

the reason being is because honda recommends trans services every 7500 miles. this is because they dont use a filter, they use an orfice tube and dirty fluid causes it to plug up and then you start to lose volumn and then it tears the internals up. before you buy new check for a used one in your area. your 91 has a regular filter and remember the old chevy's that you could drive for a 100,000 miles without ever looking at the transmission. filters work better and services are further inbetween. but being a honda certified tech and a 20 plus yr auto tech, i still service mine at 7500 miles and replace the filter every 15,000 miles and i own a jeep :)

Honda has what is called a TCC solenoid switch located just inside the side cover of the trans which regulates the stall speed of the converter. This switch can be replaced at a much lower cost.
