Previous studies have shown that stress during pregnancy can increase the risk of low birth weight and premature births, says lead researcher Catherine Monk, PhD, with the psychiatry department at Columbia University in New York.
However, a growing body of evidence also suggests that pregnancy stress may "re-program" the fetal development in ways that affect the baby's behavior and functioning later in life, she says.
For example, babies of women suffering from depression are more difficult to soothe shortly after birth. They also have poorer reflexes and higher levels of the stress hormones cortisol and epinephrine. Whether these changes affect the child's fetal and long-term health and development are not known, says Monk.

They say that the baby can be affected by your moods, but just because you are pregnant does not mean that you do not have stress in your life, if anything it brings on more stress about how to take care of him/her, and what things you need to buy, etc....
I agree that hormones do play a big part in how we feel. And you can't help that.

Stress messes with your blood pressure, breathing, eating and sleeping habits. To have a healthy pregancy, you need to have your blood pressure under control, the right amount of clean air and oxygen mix (hyperventilating messes with the mix), healthy food (stress can mess with your appetite), and restful sleep. Normal daily stresses (like needing to do laundry and finish that report for night class) usually would be tolerable, but an abusive relationship, death of a loved one, fiancial distress, etc. can be too much for a woman who's body is already under a lot of physical stress just by being pregnant. And the effects of the stress can be horrible for the unborn baby. It's best to avoid great amounts of stress when you're pregnant and to not stress out a pregnant woman.

Extra stress will increase the levels of hormones like cortisol in your bloodstream, and these will transfer to the baby's blood. Cortisol, while helpful for stressful situations like being attacked by a bear, can do some nasty things like suppressing the immune system, increasing blood pressure, and others.

There are many negative side effects of stress during pregnancy. Studies show that very high levels of stress may contribute to an increased risk of premature delivery or low birth weight babies. Still other studies suggest that overly high stress levels can increase your heart rate, blood pressure and produce chronic anxiety. None of these side effects are good for your baby. Remember that just as what you eat affects your baby, so too does your stress level and your emotional health.

it might have affect, 2 of 3 were stressful situations. for me my favorite music always relieved stress
one seems to adapt well to any situation, but I always had music on
the other is an angry bossy type. I always feel like I i have to make up for it. Music wasn't available all the time.
my middle one I use to put music on (sometimes with headphones) and times weren't stressful. she's a calm happy little one..

Stress is especially bad in the first few months while baby is getting the basic skelatal structure. I saw this firsthand when my cousin-in-law was preggie. Her dad was murdered by the police with a tazer gun. She was 2 months. The baby was born with four fingers on one hand and three on the other.

Being pregnant is not the easiest thing in the world and if you are stressed then it only makes it harder. Trying to stay calm keeps your blood pressure down and if your BP goes up while you are pregnant, it causes problems.
