well i doubt ur modem has wireless built into it so you most likely do need a wireless router. You can probably wire your laptop to your modem which would save u some money but if u do get the router i suggest you get a linksys router
http://www.linksys.com
get one of the cheaper ones unless you need a long range

Wow what a bunch of unknowners...lol If you are using a USB wireless dongle, then you already have wireless set up, and no router is needed. Go to Control Panel in the main system and click on Network Connections. Find out the IP settings by clicking Properties, TCP/IP and see what you have for the main computer. Do the same for the laptop, only set the TCP/IP settings to use a default rather than Obtain Automatically. Set the TCP/IP number one higher than your main system. Use the same Subnet Mask and the same Default Gateway. You can run without a router, as long as you are not wanting to share files between them. If you want to share files, you need a hub, or router. By one higher I mean that if the IP Address of the main is something like 192.168.1.1 then you want to change the last number to be 192.168.1.2 for the laptop etc. Hope this helps.

Sounds like you need a Modem/Wireless Router combi. This plugs into your cable connection in place of your USB cable modem. The router provides wireless (and wired) LAN access to the shared broadband connection - but be careful to buy one that works with your cable connection.

Call your cable company - I'm sure they'd try and sell you one. Ask them which model they would sell you, then go get it yourself.

Don't trust the boys and girls in PC World to sell you one. They'll probably sell you one that works with a standard phone line.

Get a LinkSys broadband router. Hook your modem to the router. Config your router to be secure. It will come with software if configuring it manually seems intimidating.

You need a wireless router. D-Link, Netgear are very good. You should be able to get one below $100.
