They probably seem to be that way because they are scared out of their wits! They are no longer in the hand held environment of grade school. Even if they were cool there, they now have to start all over again. They are trying adjust to very big changes in their lives (including the ones in their bodies and emotions). It is not as easy as it looks and they are just trying to cope.

HORMONES!!! thats the answer to most things around that age...Both in girls and boys, the body is secreting hormones all the time and at different rates and quantities. SO thats why they are so moody. Puberty is pretty dominant at that age.
Also I take it you are a kind of authority figure (e.g. parent, teacher)...They are testing there boundries with you, how far they can push you etc...They do not like the fact that someone is responsible for them, they think that because they have hit puberty and are moving up in school, the are more independant.

My theory anyway

Because they are 9th graders. Everyone is selfish at that age. Sorry. Most people outgrow it by graduation.

i think its because its a new phase of their lives...starting high school. and they feel all cool about it..they want to be rebels and independent...my little sister was like that too...she still is like that even though shes in 10th grade now..ppl mature and grow out of it eventually...just do ur own thing and try to not judge them..they dont realize what theyre doing
