I would say between 2.5 to 3 feet. Large enough that you can easily move things around without getting to cramped, but small enough that you can put a grill on it if you want.

This sound silly, but we always make them at least a four or five foot square or in a circle (large that is) . Above ground fire pits serve many purposes in our weather, zones 8 and 9...we all sit around in the winter time for warmth, the kids cook hot dogs or grill hamburgers on them, etc...

At least 5 foot in diameter. This will give a good clearance and enough room that several people can gather round.
