First off find how much more John spends than Marisa for each "unit of spend."

This is obviously $2.

If you divide the $120 by the $2 extra, then you get 60 "units of spend".

If you multiply this 60 by the total amount that John spends for each "unit of spend" which is $5. Therefore the total he spends is $300.

Each time Marisa spends $3, John spends @$ more than her. S0 Marisa must spend $3 60 times for John to have spent $120 more than her.
Therefore John spent 60 times 5 = 300 dollars.

5 minus 3 equals X. 120 divided by X equals Y. 5 times Y equals how much John spent. 3 times Y equals how much Marisa spent.
