The movies not that old at all and a simple internet search would undoubtely suffice in finding out about the movie but I'll give you a brief rundown. He cuts the connecting rope after a lenghty period of time of holding it, because he thinks his companion has died. But good to know both men survive in the end and there were no hard feelings about him cutting the rope.
