I am going to have my wii in my room, one room away from my computer. Will it have to be closer to the computer at all? Will the computer have to be connected to the internet?

The Wii Will Use WiFi Connection To Get Online And Play Games, Download, etc..

That Means That The Wii Will Need To Connect To A Wireless Router Or A Nintendo Wifi USB Dongle..

It Has Been Confirmed That The USB Dongle Will Be Able To Connect Your Wii As Well As Your DS, So If You Don't Have A Wireless Router Yet, The Dongle Is Probably A Good Idea..

But Don't Go On And Get It Yet..
There Has Been Word That There Will Be A Cable To Connect Your Wii Directly To Your Cable Connection..
No Further Word Has Been Said About That Yet..

I found the below on play.com:-

Communication:
Wii can communicate with the Internet even when the power is turned off. This WiiConnect24 service delivers a new surprise or game update, even if users do not play with Wii. Users can connect wirelessly using IEEE 802.11b/g, or with a USB 2.0 LAN adaptor. Wii also can communicate wirelessly with Nintendo DS.

Virtual Console:
Wii will have downloadable access to 20 years of fan-favourite titles originally released for Nintendo 64, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) and even the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES).
