I have had my job for 15 months, and I like the company that I work for. Last year, my department wasn't invited to the Christmas party but I couldn't do anything about it because I was the new person. I work in the transportation department of a company and my department has always been the weak dept, notorious for a lack of communtication and organization. Well, I was hired to raise the bar among my co-workers and implement new standards for intra-office communication. In the past year, I have become the system administrator for the web based program that our entire company uses, and our department has drastically improved in productivity. I recently finished a cost analysis project that will save our department an estimated 17% next year. My goal was to impress and change the face of my dept. Well, the invites just went out for the Xmas party, and I am not invited. There were 4 people left off the invite list, and it is 4 people in my dept. the 2 men are invited, but not the women.

I really want to quit my job after the holidays because I am really offended. Am I over-reacting??

It was definately not an oversite. We were all sat down by our boss and told that we were not invited. He also stated that he wished that he could "just not go" but that wasn't an option.

And, every other employee in the company is invited plus their spouses.

The problem obviously isn't with the party, the problem is being deliberately excluded from a group function.

I would be a little curious. Its not so much the party itself...but the principle behind it. If you have really done the stuff you say you do, they are treating you like crap. They will continue to treat you and shove you aside when they have no use for you. What you need is a little recognition for your hard work. I say, if you have superiors, talk to them and ask them if your hard work had gone un-noticed. Reiterate all the hard work and results you've put in. If your invitation was simply overlooked, then they will probably extend the invitation to you. If in fact, your company does not reward employees for their efforts, then its time to get out. Money may be great but respect is another.

A similiar situation goes on at my place of employment also. I work for the corporate office of a 14 temp agencies in Florida. The company also does payroll for over 500 companies including Denny's. I work in the Accounts Recievable Department as a Collections Specialist. The owner of the company has another business a small phone company. Those employees do not get invited to the the trips the company goes on every 2 years. In 05 we went to Atlantis in the Bahamas. The phone company employees do not have benefits. My personal opinion corporate xmas parties can sometimes be stiff and boring. Everyone's friendly that night and then on the morning after the party no one wants to say good morning. I dislike the phony bullshit that goes on in the corporate world. It can ware some people out. I would look for another job your probably underpaid for your skills anyway. Go to a company that your skills are appreciated. Your invited to all the office functions. look into venturi partners they placed a friend of mines at Pfizer a couple of years ago. He's still there making an abnoxious amount of money. Good luck in whatever decision you make. I wouldn't worry about that corny *** party either. Your department go out amongst yourselves and have a ball.

That is just wrong.
I know how bad it sucks to be left out. It hurts and messes with your self esteem.
If there were 20 people not invited I would say, Well maybe they have a budget for parties. But only 4 people not invited screams PRESCHOOL, Only these ones can come in my fort, you guys can't!!
You should plan an alternative party with the other workers not invited/not going. Do something outrageous and fun like: fly to Vegas for a nite or rent Santa Clause suits and go bowling, dress up like scrooge and go play paintball, go dancing, anything that will have them looking forward to something fun to counteract the slap in the face work Christmas party.
And then when you guys are invited to the stupid work Christmas party next year, you can say, Sorry we already have plans.

No, I would be upset too. Try talking to your boss and asking why? If you don't get any where, try HR. I think that the company you work for obviously has very low morals. If you guys are the only department being left off, and then they invite everybody but you 4, that's like an invitation waiting to be sued for discrimination. Company sponsored events are supposed to be for ALL employees, they cant just pick and chose like that.

I would first start by just flat out asking about your invitation and the invitations of the other people. As they may have thought they sent it and just may be an over site. (Most likely not but give them the benefit of doubt)

Depending on their answer would depend on weather or not I would find another job.

And ask in person (be polite) so you can see their reaction when you ask.

You need to ask, politely and privately. Why leave without even knowing why?
