I had to drive my car out of state and I think 21 cents a mile is too low.

Show him this article from the IRS. This is the legal amount he can claim on his business taxes. $0.445 per mile.

Tell him to either pay the mileage, or to pay all real expenses. Also, make sure the cheap s.o.b pays you for every minute you are gone.

added later: You can claim it on your taxes IF you itemize deductions already and you would claim the difference between what you are reimbursed and what the legal allowance is.

Look on the Internal Revenue site, or Google "car allowance".

Last time I looked it was about $0.435 cents per mile.

You can always deduct this from your taxes if you have proof from employer you had to use your own car for business.
