Sam Han,
It is a celebration of the occult that has been dumbed down to a candy give away. Do some research about the Jack-O-Lantern and you will be surprised.

The point of halloween is for kids to dress up and get candy and for people to tell spooky stories.
Halloween is the first fall season opener and fall is a great season.
Do not get carried away with propaganda regarding the importance of religion in halloween and just be thankful.

It's just a fun day for kids to dress up in a costume and get some candy.

Geez, chill.
I use it as another chance to do stuff with my kids. We spend lots of time coming up with costume ideas and shopping thrift stores for supplies. We go to church festivals and visit the rest home.

Commericalized version - to dress up and get candy - Halloween
The original version - to celebrate the last of the harvest, to honor the dead and to bring on the new year. - Samhain (pronounced Sow-en)

You obviously don't have kids....
Little ones love to play pretend. (Bigs ones too for that matter.)
Most little ones are too small to understand Thanks Giving but are very clear on Halloween.
It gives them a chance to expressed their own imagination publicly and have fun doing it. Let's not forget their rewards!
Pointless ? I'm for anything to promote imagination in the young.
