Because learned people understand the value of evidence based claims as opposed to claims of conjecture. Also, intellectuals are usually fond of learning, it's fun for them. The more one learns about science and history and is able to draw connections between beliefs and what we know to be true about the world it becomes obvious that religion and the god concept are human creations. Critical thinking is another key element. One with a skeptical scientific mind is more prepared to recognize claims of truth and dismiss claims of falsehood.

Intellectuals tend to question things they are told. They have looked objectively at religion and the concept of god and god's law and discerned the obvious: that god and god's law has always been defined by man with man's own agenda [the wielding of power and control over others]. All the major religions have instittutionalized mythology in an attempt to legitimize or make it real--they recognize the human attraction to mythology.
also, if we look at the language used in books such as the Bible you find the same language, demands for acceptance of their power, as well as the dire punishments for not complying, that dictators and other autocratic rulers have used for hundreds of years to control their people. It becomes clear that it is the voice of man that we hear in the Bible, the Koran, or the Talmund. It is a voice that is concerned control over others, full of its own agenda: political power, the control and subjugation of women [for example], as well as economic gain.
Rejection of religion is a natural state for anyone who has chosen to examine and challenge the concept of god that has been given to them. It comes from observing human behavior and noting that there have always been those who use mythology to control others--they try to legitimize their power with the weight of supernatural backing. believing in god involves having an incredible amount of faith in ambitious, charismatic, manipulative would be leaders who will give you nothing but self serving and simplistic reasons to explain away the most flawed elements of their religion.

The bible is full of double talk, an eye for an eye, or is it turn the other check. If something bad happens its Gods will if something good happens its also Gods will. If God is a God of Love then how can he let children suffer the most ha-nus of sicknesses and pain, abuse etc.
