My friend had this problem a few weeks ago and she called the company where she bought the fridge from. They told her to open the windows and get out of the house and wait for the repairman. This was a new fridge and something was leaking from it that caused poisonous fumes in the air.
Have it checked out to be safe, hope this isn't the cause though.

ammonia smell is easy to get rid of. it evaporates quickly, just open a window. the hard part is determining where it is coming from. if you haven't used ammonia to clean anything....
one unpleasant option. obviously the smell is coming from near the refrigerator. do you have a cat? if not, is the kitchen above a crawl space where a stray may have gotten in? male cats urine is VERY strong w/ ammonia, although all cat urine has ammonia smell. if stray has gotten in to your crawl space, they may be using an area underneath the kitchen as their bathroom.
