You only have to tell him once but give him clear and concise reasoning so that there is no mistake and cut him off for a while, there's no such thing as jumping right into a friendship when one person still has feelings. I have a feeling that you are trying not to be mean, so you still answer his calls and give him the small talk and maybe even go out with him as "friends" occassionally. You need to really make it clear to him that boundaries have changed. And dont go back to even being friendly until you are sure that those boundaries are going to be respected by him. Good Luck

When I was going with a guy (a very long time ago) I told him I wanted to break up because he was seeing his ex girlfriend and me at the same time. He sat in the front of my parents home for 4 hours, until my dad told him to leave. He finally left and in the morning he was there again. After about a week of this, of him parking in front, and me ignoring him and having dad tell him to get his butt away from the house. He left. But then he started to call. It took 2 months of phone calls, bothering me at work, etc. Before he realized that I was serious, and then he married his ex-girlfriend.

If its done right.. then only once. You must not be making yourself very clear. And after that one time, you shouldn't continue to speak to him.. so if there was any confusion, not speaking to him or having any contact with him for a long time, would clear it right up.
But when you do break up with someone make it very clear and keep it honest. Be truthful and tell them why you are breaking up with them.. dont bullsh*t around the reason.. tell them so they have closure and can use it as constructive criticism for the future.

Don't be nice, like 'being friends', it confuses guys, then talk to them once you have a steady bf.
