There were supposedly 12 games, not all were released in the U.S. though but playstation has come out with anthologies so you can play some of the old games.
Final fantasy came out on the original nintendo system and was later re-released on playstation with Final fantasy 2 on a disc called: FINAL FANTASY ORIGINS.
They also released final fantasy anthologies which has Final fantasy 4 and final fantasy 5 on it on playstation.
They also released Final fantasy chronicles which has 6 on it and chrono trigger (not a final fantasy game but better than any final fantasy ever made, including todays).
7,8 and 9 were released on the playstation while they then released 10 on ps2.
They came out with a final fantasy online which was number 11.
They have now come up with final fantasy 12 where the main character looks like a total sissy.
Don't bother with any final fantasy past 7. After that the series completely went downhill and traded graphics for good story and gameplay.
If you want a good videogame rpg type thing try xenogears or chrono trigger (already mentioned) it is a classic. Fanboys will jock these games no matter how bad they are. It has pretty much gotten to the point where they will buy the game even if what is on the disc is just a blank screen, and they will love it.

Final Fantasy is mainly a videogame series, but there are a few movies based on the games or others that are totally original with nothing to do with the games. There is also an anime series.
The Videogames:
Final Fantasy (FF) started as a Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) role-playing game (RPG) back in '87 in Japan (the NES there is known as the Famicom). From there many sequels followed, with FFII & FFIII realsed also for the Famicom, FFIV, FFV & FFVI were released for the Super Famicom (Super NES in America), FFVII, FFVIII and FFIX were released for the Playstation, FFX, FFX-2, FFXI & FFXII (this last one to be released tomorrow 10/31 here in America) for the Playstation 2.
No FF game has anything to do with another, (i.e. there is no continuation of the story from, say, FFII to FFIII) aside from some characters having the same name and sharing the same expertise (i.e. there is a character named Cid that appears in almost all the games and always has a knack for building/reaseaching machines). The big exception is FFX-2 which continues the story of FFX.
FFII, FFIII & FFV weren't released originally in America, but years later both FFII and FFV were released as remakes for the Playstation. Because of this, when FFIV was released here is was under "FFII" and FFVI under "FFIII" which caused a little confusion to the consumer. This has been corrected for the later remakes that were released on several consoles. A remake of FFIII is due out 11/14 on the Nintendo DS so on this date all serialized Final Fantasy titles will have come to America in one form or another.
There are several games that carry the "Final Fantasy" name but are not numbered, they more like spinoffs of the series and with few exceptions they are not as good as the numbered titles. These titles are FF Tactics, FF Mystic Quest, FF Dirge of Cerberus, FF Tactics Advance, FF Crystal Chronicles (2 games), FF Adventure (2 games, these did not carry the "FF" name in Japan).
Finally, as I've said, FF games have been rereleased as remakes, collections and compilations over the years, for several consoles, even for PC.
The Movies:
There have been two movies based on the games: FFVII Advent Children and FFVII Last Order, the first one continues the story of the videogame (FFVII) and the second one tells part of the story of FFVII.
There is one anime series known as FF Unlimited which to my knolownedge does not have anything to do with the game's stories.
And finally there is another movie FF The Spirits Within, which also isn't related to the videogames.

So far there have been 11 FF games *12th is due out soon*. This does not count the games FF: Tactics *a great game btw!* or Dirge of Cerberus or the animated movies *Final Fantasy: The Crystal Chronicals or Final Fantasy Unlimited, or FF7: Advent Children, or even *deep breath :)* Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. My favorite games are : FF3, FF7, Dirge and Tactic.
And to a fellow answer-er. No, nobody beats Sephiroth.....EXCEPT VINCENT VALENTINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ^__^
OH, how could I forget, various FF characters are featured in Kingdom Hearts I & II ^____^

Okay...there absolutely is a first one, released around '86, I believe for the origional NES...and it was titled simply "Final Fantasy". The 12th sequel is due out soon, and there have been spin-offs of the series as well, such as "Final Fantasy Tactics" and numerous others. My personal favs were FF3 (US) and FF7 (US). 10 was good as well, but jeez...nobody beats Sephiroth.
ADDITION: "Final Fantasy" was released here for the Origional NES long before the Super NES was released. The first FF game on the SNES was FF2 (US).
