I have had both. The spinal only works for about 90 minutes and the epidural is a steady stream of medicine. Sometimes they start with a spinal and then give you a epidural, the spinal is instant and the epidural can take a few minutes to get going. If you are close to delivery get a spinal you will not have a tube going into your spine. If delivery is a long way off go for the epidural. I have gone natural as well, but only the first time. I knew better after that.

An epidural reduces the pain and you really can't feel anything. A spinal block is more involved because it basically paralyzes you from the waist down such as when you need a c-section. I've had both and one was an emergency spinal block after the epidural failed and I was in stage 3 labor because they had to do an emergency c-section. The other was a spinal block because they had to deliver my twins by emergency c-section and the worst part was the guy scrubbing my back with the antibacterial soap. I didn't even feel the needle after that. If it is not an emergency situation, go with the epidural.

That has been discussed a lot in web forums, including Google Answers and especially right here in Yahoo Answers. If you want to read comments from people about their experiences with epidurals and spinal blocks, check out these forum search results from DNoneOfTheAbove.com:

spinal blocks are only used for c-sections. last time i checked. a spinal block wears off after 90 minutes whereas an epidural lasts for hours.

an epidural blocks the pain from contractions, and wears off sooner, the spinal block numbs everything below the site to include your legs. it also takes longer to wear off,
my labor went so long, that by the time he was born, the epidural was no longer working. both also both take away the ability to push. but it is still worth it. i would ask your docter which one they prefer, is this your first? if so your labor will be longer. congrats on your baby.......kim
