I absolutely agree, on a regular basis I meet children who have amazing potential, but because their parents don't care enough to help them rise above the extremely low expectations that are placed on them in urban neighborhoods they place more emphasis on memorizing whatever song is at the top of the charts. This places more stress on teachers who can't possibly devote the personlized attention that almost every student is going to need. It starts at home. Parents need to work with teachers to get children a quality education.

I agree with him, however, I believe this should be for all parents. I realize that it is harder on single parents, but they can still try to find ways to get involved. Some studies have shown that when parents get involved, students do a lot better in school, even if the parent doesn't always understand some the content. It just shows that the parent does care and it makes the student more confident. There are too many parents who get tutors to help their kids, because parents want someone else to take care of the education of their kids. I realize that sometimes there is a real need for a tutor, but there have been some cases where parents get a tutor because they want their child to get ahead, when what the child needs is their parents involvement. There are now parents getting tutors for 3 year pre-schooler. They want their children to get ahead of other 3 year olds. Studies have shone that parents need to be involved more at that age rather someone else teaching their kids. It is a shame really, educators blame parents and parents blame educators for the problems, when what should happen is a good collaboration.

Schools can work if parents are held to be responsible for their child's behavior. They need to be called in to school whenever the child is having behavior problems and be part of the solution. So many however say its the schools problem and defect on any contribution to aiding the child or assisting the school to implement changes. The Fundamental School system in Pinellas County Florida requires that the child complete all homework assignments and that the assignment be signed by a parent. There is also a strict dress code. Student discipline is a joint proposition involving the parent's participation. Parents are required to attend PTA meetings. A contract is signed by the school, parent and child when he/she enters the program. Infractions by child or parent are grounds for the student to be reassigned immediately to the zoned regular school. The Fundamental School system has a waiting list and is academically equal to the best of Private schools.

Parents should be more involved. You can tell which kids have involved parents and which don't--in behavior, grades, etc. I say go Bill Cosby because some people don't listen and expect teachers to raise their children but by the time the teachers get them, it is already too late.

Tough love is tough. Blacks without complete families are totally lacking in what Bill says. Hell, black and white (and blue for that matter) families in general lack real discipline to reign in the kids, much less than moral guidance, stability, love, hope for a better life, etc. Too many parents either have to or worry about just getting by and their kids are sideline attractions to most of them. Yeah, but don't you criticise or discipline their kids- oh, the whip comes down then (Oh, my poor baby, what have they done to you?)

He's right.....I think that Parents and Teachers don't do enough to help kids......they wait until it is too late then say oh my kid won't learn or listen.....it starts from day one.....
As the parent of a 5yr old I am completely commited.....When it comes to my childs education I will not rest until I find the best for us.....I work closely with her and her teachers and they keep me updated on any concerns......It will make a difference.....

I believe ALL parents should get more involved with their children's lives and education. If you have sex and have kids, then get involved. Read to them, sit with them when they are doing homework, volunteer in their schools. Parents are not doing this, and education starts at home.

I think his advice is good for ALL parents and young people - black, white or other. Stay in school, learn good English, get a job and get married before you consider having children.

It's about time someone put the blame where it belongs and that applies to all parents, not just black ones.
