The man in black, Earnhardt Sr.

Well, it's a close call between Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Richard Petty. Earnhardt had 7 cup titles and 76 overall victories in his 25 full years of racing. Petty also had 7 cup titles, however, he holds the all-time record with 200 overall victories in his 34 year career. So for those who are counting, it seems that Petty was the best. But as for me, I'll always be an Earnhardt fan! WE MISS YOU DALE!!!!

Dale Sr.? PLEEEEESE!!
Dale never drove anything that didn't have fenders and a roof. And while he WAS great and worthy of legendary status, he pushed and punted his way to half of his victories. Don't make him into something he's not.

The answer is...

A.J. Foyt.

7 Indy Car championships.
67 Indy Car victories.
2 time IROC champion.
7 Nascar Grand National (now Nextel Cup) wins including 1972 Daytona 500.
9 Nascar Grand National (now Nextel Cup) pole positions.
Winner or 1967 LeMans, and two time 24 hours of Daytona winner.
Numerous other wins in Sports cars, sprint cars, midgets, dirt and pavement stocks, and even won a chariot race against Parnelli Jones.

Named Driver of the Century by Associated Press and ESPN's RPM 2Night.
American Sportscasters Association Sports Legend in 1993.
Inaugural inductee into the Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1989.

A.J. Foyt is simply the best, most versatile racer in history. Period.

The best all around driver is Tony Stewart. He has won 11 championships in 6 different types of racing. That man can win in anything you put him in!

You really should be more specific in what kind of racing you are asking about. All these nice people have given answers to their respective favorite series but I know a few more that could be in there as well.

Winged sprint car- Steve Kinser
Non winged sprints- Cory Cruseman
Dirt SLM- Scott Bloomquist
IMCA/UMP modifieds- Kelly Shyrock
NHRA Funny Car-John Force
NHRA Dragster- Joe Amato

I think Dale Earnhardt Sr with Tony Stewart bringing up second. If Tony Stewart stays in racing for as long as Dale did, I think he can surpass him. He has 11 national titles, in how many different types of racing and race cars???!!??? IMHO, there is not, right now a more overall and talented driver out there, than Tony Stewart!!

There is no way that it isn't Richard Petty. He has 200 wins and the next closest driver has like 84. They don't call him the King for nothing!

Impossible question to answer. For a start, you don't say what kind of racing! If you mean pure and simply the best racing driver to get behind the wheel of any car of any time, there is no answer.
