I want to access the apex of my slate roof with a ladder but it flares out at the bottom of the roof, does anyone have any tips on the best way to use a straight ladder on my roof without cracking the tiles at the bottom of the roof?

Not sure of the answer above, slate is really easy to replace and readily available. Chinese is about £1, spanish £2, Welsh £5

Chinese is rubbish, welsh is best, Spainish is an excellent comprimise.

Use a board to spread the load: hook the ladder over the ridge tiles and rest the bottom of it a few feet up from the bottom of the roof on a board. Its ok to use several boards if you need to raise the ladder clear of the bottom row. Just make sure they are nailed together

Actually slate is quite strong and if laid correctly, spanning 3 battens, will take the weight of a person.

Where trainers that have give in them, not big boots that focus the weight on one place.

The old fashioned way was to put a sack stuffed with straw under the point where the ladder touches the roof.

Try using ladder jacks but, I would first ask a local roofer because slate is hard to replace.
Good luck
