down syndrome happens in 1 out of 800 births. there are many different types of down syndrome with trisomy 21 as being the most common. children born with trisomy 21 have the classic signs of DS: almond shaped eyes, ears are placed lower on their heads, they are also shorter in stature and have some degree of mental retardation as well as heart defects or gastro-intestinal defects. you need to know also that not all children with DS are the same. some kids don't have all the classic features or have the same degree of mental retardation or health problems.
DS is caused by an extra set of chromosomes, it is not something that is predisposed from the mother or the father or from drugs or alcohol

Prenatal alcohol exposure is the leading cause of mental retardation. I just did an essay for a college class on the effects of drugs and alcohol on unborn babies. Here are some web sites that I used:
http://www.guttmacher.org
http://www.americanpregnancyassociation.org
http://www.marchofdimes.com
http://samhsa.gov
You can also try the New England Journal of medicine, but you can't always access what you want to use.
Most of these site deal with drug and alcohol use during pregnancy. You might also try typing birth defects/drugs and alcohol into a search engine and see what you come up with. Good luck! This is a great topic to find a lot of information about! If you would like any more info, you can contact me. I'd be happy to help.

Down's Syndrome is trisomy 13 (genetic) and Spina bifida is from lack of folic acid in the mother when she's pregnant so it's environmental. Cerebral Palsy is an injury to the brain before or during birth. Fetal alcohol syndrome is from the mother drinking more than one alcoholic drink a day during pregnancy.
You're topic is too broad and you need to narrow it down.
