Learning to do what you are told without having to be told, in other words, how to lose your personality, self respect and desire for independent thinking.
NB: If she ever tells you she wants a break, that she thinks it could be 'good for our relationship' it means she's met someone else.

Rather like we have a mental intelligence which we measure as IQ, we also have an emotional intelligence. This includes things like how we deal with different situations, how we cope with our feelings, how we relate to other people etc.
therefore, i would assume emotional development is gaining emotional intelligence and maturity
