If the base is not solid, neither will anything built on it. Engineers have to know what they are dealing with, and if possible, how to keep it stable. If constructing an tunnel or a mine, what are you going to dig through? Sandstone, shale, granite? Will it stay up? Ever hear of sinkholes? They occur in limestone valleys. Do you want your house on one?
