In the early days of euro road racing there were no roof tops for a number placement. Open cockpit and usually w/o a safety harness. Standards for number marking conformity had not been established, making it difficult to spot your particular car. Several cars might be the same type/model and color. So the teams used unusual markings (racing stripes) to I.D. their car at distance. Remember no radio communication, only hand boards that a crew member would raise when his car passed. Well the cars are traveling fast, and they weren't marked very well so you give your car a specific identifying mark or stripe so that the board man could raise the message board before the driver raced past. Read fast.

As the guy from Kokomo says it's principal was for id, unfortunately it also started the trend for "Go Faster Striping" certainly in England so you'd see a Robin Reliant (3 wheeler, for the Americans reading this see http://www.3wheelers.com/robin.html) or Austin Allegro (http://www.austin-rover.co.uk/index.htm?ado67indexf.htm) going past painted like a Lancia Delta or BMW stripes!

Huh??? i visit't say i have even considered a one colored automobile in years. maximum communities ( with sponsors ) paint the motorized vehicle the way their sponsors want. i imagine someones pulling your leg. it would want to seem good in case you get the mild reflective stripes for everyone taking photos.
