Sorry if this is a silly question, but I've always been concerned about it. Are there any risks with this common behavior? What if they were choking under the blanket and you couldn't hear them?

Thanks for the good answers - I honestly didn't know it helped to prevent colic, I'm glad I asked so I could find out why it was done.

I have done it with my son since he was born. He is 7 mths old now. I also use a blanket, usually a light cotton receiving one, to shield him from the harmful sun. A sunburn would be terrible for a baby, and for really young babies the bright light can hurt there eyes because their pupils are not fully developed enough to handle it. I am sure people aren't putting the blanket right tight to the babies face, they are just using it over a carrier or stroller, or for a moment from house to car or visa versa.

No, it will not hurt the baby! They are doing it so that the baby won't get colic. When a baby breathes cool air, they can get a case of the colic. It is a convenient way to carry them from car to outside to a building without shocking their little lungs. They still have plenty of oxygen, but I never leave them covered for an extended period of time.

nYou can cover a baby up as much as you want, as long as the head sticks out, the Baby won't be choking. I would not call this a behavior and not a cultural thing either. If its cold, cover up.
Only in North America have I ever heard of SIDS, And that has nothing to do with covering the baby up. One should be more concerned about all the mothers who put their babies on their stomach. Maybe that's why SIDS is so prominent in this country.

When I ever did that, like if I was taking her out to the car and it was real windy out or something, instead of placing a blanket directly over her, I'd put it over the handle of her carrier and drape it around. And it wasn't even for a minute, so there were no problems or anything.

If not they would be dead real fast and you don't hear of it happening, do you? Try a test for yourself to see what kind of air you will get. Go out and if you have a clothesline, put a blanket over one of the lines and secure it to the ground with bricks or something that will hold it. Then get inside and see if it is obstructing your air that you breathe. it is the same for a baby.
then go out and have someone inside and have them say something to see if you can hear them. Same for the baby again. You can hear more than you think through blankets.

Yeah me and my wife did that also. It was usually only for very brief periods when he was a newborn. When we went from the Car to indoors in cold weather or if it rained or snowed. Had he been born in the summer I don't think we would have.

I ses this a lot too. There is nothing wrong with doing that, it is a cultural thing. I personally never covered either of my babies up and they are healthy and great. To each his own.

As long as the blanket is not on their face they should be fine.
