Hard water will wear out clothes faster. A good water softener should be installed to insure that your clothes have a long life. If you have soft water than laundry should be fine. If you can't afford a water softener, add a conditioner to you wash cycle called Boraxo..it will help soften the water. Also, hot water will sterilize your clothes somewhat better than cold but, again, you will age your clothes faster and in hot water, colors may fade.

Water is not the solvent but the carrier(suspension). The soap, whatever you use, is the solvent and suspends the dirt, works it out of the material and the suds carry it out with the aid of the water, the suspension.

Water has very high surface tension. That and its price make it the perfect thing for cleaning laundry.

water is a solvent. the dirt becomes suspended in the solvent and allows it to be carried away. detergents usually help break up dirt so it can be carried away by the water.
