Hate is never constructive. It is divisive. However, opposing opinions are a healthy part of any educated discussion, and are to be encouraged. It is possible to have opposing opinions without hate, it requires intelligent consideration.
Just as a small child cannot know right from wrong if wrong is never introduced, a true liberal/conservative or Democrat/Republican can never know their true ideology without knowing the opposing viewpoint. All issues require careful consideration against personal ideals and views.
If you look carefully, you will find much of the hate is simply engendered by ignorance. Too many people believe things "because I'm a liberal/conservative/Democrat/Republican". This is simple laziness and a lack of personal thought.
I saw a statement about a week ago that "I hate G.W. Bush because I'm a Democrat." That is asinine. You cannot hate a person based on the views of a party. You can disagree with his actions, ideals and viewpoints, but this is a lame excuse for hatred.
If more Americans (and people in general) would think for themselves, and look into issues before making a generalization based on what others think, you would find the hate would not have any fuel, and would dissipate.

It matters only to the extent that people are able to get things off their chest.
In real life, the movements (liberal/conservative) are simply ideologies that have been assigned by politicians to make the population believe one way or the other.
I think the bashing is finally going to cause a backlash! Eventually we will begin thinking about all the garbage being spewed by our elected politicians. At that point Libertarians, Independents and Write In's will start to have an impact... But, until then we just have to wait for those that believe what they hear on the media. That could be a generation or two.

No it is not. However that is exactly what you get with a two party system. With only two viable parties, it is a given that the "us" and "them" mentality exists. It is one of the major reasons the country is in the mess that currently exists. If you are for pulling out of Iraq, you're a commie gutless pinko. If you are for stay the course, you are a warmonger. If you support illegal immigrants, you're anti-American. If you are against it, you are anti-business, and against helping the economy grow, and racist. If you're for raising taxes, you're a slimy liberal. If you support cutting taxes, you're a conservative republican that only thinks about yourself. If you support choice for women, and gay and lesbian marriages, you are a gay and lesbian loving, baby killing low-life, with no morals. If you support abortion, and are against marriages that are not between a man and a woman, you are a true, God loving American, whose morals should be imposed on those less fortunate that do not agree with you. As long as the two party system is in place, this ugly cycle of hatred will continue.

Usually the people who post the questions have a one sided view and complain about the other party doing the same exact things their party does.
