RE:
what do people mean when dancing is a vertical expression of a horizontal desire?

The act of dancing is not necessarily the "vertical expression of a horizontal desire" but if you think about it, SOME dancing, such as hip hop or "grinding" is definately considered this.
For example, the hands roaming over the arms or legs, the rotation of hips, and in many cases the kissing from a outsider's point of view does look just like sex does from the mirror above a bed.
Though I think there are some forms of dancing, such as line dances and country & western which don't have the same effect.

Note context: This relates to late 18th to the turn of the 19th century dancers, where people danced together (fully dressed) and social convention did not allow premarital sex nor outward expression of affection.

Dancing: two people standing vertically, moving in a rhythmic motion, coordinated, with physical contact, eye contact, and attraction.
Sexual intercourse: two people lying horizontally, moving in a rhythmic motion, coordinated, with physical contact, eye contact, and attraction.

Watch Salsa, or even people who really love each other, on the dance floor. Its all there. They express themselves. Many women like a good dancer because it suggests virile and healthy person. This is something copied throughout the animal kingdom.

Without any attraction, and unless professionals do it, dancing looks dull.

*chuckles* I've never heard that one before, but I can make a guess as to what it means.

The horizontal desire = sex. So I guess dancing is a way of acting out sexual desires...vertically ;D

The imply that dancing (which is done standing up, vertically) is an expression of a sexual desire. Now, you can agree or disagree...

dancing represents the 'vertical expression'
and horizontal desire is the floor which dancing is done upon

It means that how you move on the dance floor as a couple translates into how you would move together as a couple in the bedroom. Also dancing should be a time choreographed synchronized series of movements. Ones that if you and your partner know how to execute together in harmony translates into a relationship in the bedroom.

The expression "Dancing is a verbal expression of a horizontal desire." was supposed to have been said by Robert Frost. http://www.quoteworld.org/quotes/5077
George Bernard Shaw is supposed to have embellished the quote by appending "legalized by music" to it. http://en.thinkexist.com/quotation/dancing-the_vertical_expression_of_a_horizontal/259005.html

The so-called horizontal desire is the act of sexual intercourse, which the movements of a dance such as the tango, seem to express through the fluidity and passion of its intertwined dancers.

Dancing does not equal sex. Dancing is more about passion and love, freedom, feeling safe in the arms of the person you are dancing with. me and my bf does ballroom dancing and if you take the tango for instance it is a sexy dance a powerful one. dancing for me with my bf is an expression of our love for each other. please do not think of dancing as sex cause its not its like that song from Bryan Adams have you ever really loved a woman the feeling you get when youre really in love and listening to the song, you can compare dancing with that!! my opinion anyway!!!!
