I work in a law firm with 3 lawyers. the one i work for directly, just had a baby and wont be back until january. im the only one in the office that can work on her cases, so i feel bad leaving that kind of burden on the office, should i happen to quit. however, they dont pay me good enough to live off of, and i just moved a half hour away, and im afraid the effort just to get to work in the winter will not be worth the weekly pay. i havent gotten a raise in over a year, and they ask for more work than they pay you for. oh, and no overtime, even if you work it. they are an excellent reference and i dont wish to burn that bridge. but i dont want to stay here out of guilt when the pay and everything else just isnt worth it. please help with serious advice only please.

A friend of mine once told me: "Life is way too short to work at a job where you are unhappy."

If you truly are unhappy (and you can find another job), go ahead an resign.

You must do what is best for you, not what is best for them.

You are in an excellent bargaining position! Make an appointment to sit down with your boss(es) and tell them that you really don't want to leave them shorthanded, but that you are not making enough money to survive. If they like your work and they haven't increased your pay in over a year, be assertive and tell them you need a significant increase or you will begin searching for a better position.

By the way, if your are in a non-exempt position, do some searches on labor laws and quote the overtimes laws to them. A smart lawyer will pay you correctly in order to avoid a law suit!!

If you are unhappy then by all means look for another job. Try to have another before you quit and dont burn any bridges with your current job. Work a notice, which is usually 2 weeks. You never know when you will need a reference or anything like that.

just make sure you have another job before you quit this one... don't go from little money to no money at all! After you find another job then talk to your bosses about the raise thing and how much they pay and maybe they will give you a raise so you won't have to leave. If you give a 2 week notice so they can find someone to replace you then they should still give you a good reference.

Interesting situation. I think that you could use this position to help pay the bills while looking for another position somewhere closer to your home. This would eventually help with the cost of commuting and the peace of mind of not being too far away from your child. So, I don't think that you should quit your job without having another one in line to move too. I would just look for something similar in your10 -15 min. commute.

I'd say start looking at larger firms in your area. Small firms tend to over-work and under-pay their employees. Think of yourself first, they will understand, people leave jobs all the time.

Write a list of what you truly want with your employment. Wage, hours, etc. If this job doesn't feel right instinctively then let it go and manifest a new one!!!!! Your baby needs you!!! You have to believe you will have another opportunity coming to you for this to work.....have faith.
