Unfortunately, I think he is really going to retire after this season. He has been talking about retirement for a couple of years now, and the only reason he re-signed this year was because he thought that the G-men really have a shot of going all the way.
As far as the person who thinks he is doing this for contract negotiations, he just signed a 3 year contract prior to this season beginning, so there is no negotiation going on at season end. He will be losing over $6 million when he breaks this contract.
The main reason that he stated that he is retiring, and I believe him, is he wants to be able to walk away from football.... literally walk, not be rolling off or limping away. He has already had a long career as a running back.... most don't last as long as he did (with of course a few exceptions). Of all the players the RB gets the crap knocked out of him constantly, and with as many carries as Barber gets, he is getting pummeled more than most. Thankfully with Jacobs on the team there is someone to help carry the load. And with having Jacobs on the team, Barber can leave, feeling comfortable that there is someone who can take his place.

Good question. I've been wondering about this as well. I'm suspicious of an ulterior motive here.

Every one knows that Tiki wants to go into broadcasting after he's done playing, but why would he rush it? I mean there's going to be a job waiting for him in the world of television, whenever he decides to end his career.

I'm not sure what his contract status is at the moment, but I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up that Tiki's just using this "retirement talk" as leverage to bargain for a better contract.

I think he will retire for good. The Giants are a good team, and have a fair chance of getting to the superbowl. Why would he retire from a good team?
