In an automatic car, the "clutch" is always engaged so it keeps the car rolling slightly. That or you're on a slight incline.

There are lots of hamsters on wheels inside it. when you turn the key, their favourite snacks drop down into view. When you accelerate, the snack gets closer to each hamster, so they run fater. When you brake, the food is hidden, so they stop.

When you change gear, you add more hamsters to the system, generating more power or removing hamsters when you drop a gear.
