Yes it's possible and it happens all the time. My company has a strict policy about internet usage for personal business, and the IT department has the ability to monitor usage.
We are a big company, so unless they want to hire more internet police they don't have the staff to monitor the employees all of the time. So they target poor performing people upon supervisor's request, or randomly target a particular department for a few days. They can print off a report that shows what sites you've been visiting and for how long. I could be disciplined for inapropriate behavior.

If the computers are your employers property, then they have every right to monitor the internet usage. After all, the use of the internet in this case should only be used for work reasons, not for employees to be using it for Y/A or Facebook etc.

I worked for an ISP that recorded usage statistics, and the websites that employees visited. It was used as more of a tool to reprimand or terminate employees who had slowed or poor work performance.
The only type of internet activity they proactively monitored was filesharing, and illegal music downloading as this compromised network security.
The truth is, if you were logging on to MySpace all day, but were also accomplishing your daily tasks, no one would take issue.

Yes, most have the software installed as part of the original package although some are better than others.
Some of them pick up bad language, large flies/images being sent, etc.
Depends on the size of company too, if can be very difficult to monitor everyone if there are thousands of staff.
Just don't be doing anything you shouldn't.

I work for a huge company and it is in our employment contract that they are allowed to monitor emails and internet usage...
The answer to your question: it depends on the company, but it IS possible and many do it - but they should also understand the need for a little personal usage...

It is the easiet thing to do, and believe me they will do it. This costs them millions of lost dollars a year because of misuse of company time. They know what you have looked at and the times. So if this is a regular practice, you might want to reconsider. You can be terminated with no problem over this matter.

Extremely easy for employers to find out who's going where on the internet and for how long.
They also have the ability to block any web address they want.
They can also access all your e-mail if it's a company address.

its not expensive, but most employers are more reactive than proactive when it comes to that. Unless there is some issue with this at the workplace then they dont really worry with it. Big corporations may be a different story however.

Yes, if they have the right software. My work (IT Dept) can monitor every use of the internet. If they see anything that concerns them, they can access your internet history on your pc.
