Do you have to wait until after your pregnant to tour a hospital? There are two hospitals where I live. I would like to really tour both before deciding, to see if one is better than the other or not. I'd like to know what hospital I'd definately like to go with before picking my doctor out (because certain Drs use certain hospitals). But am I going to be the only nonpregnant woman checking out hospital maternity wards?

Thanks for the people with polite responses so far. Thumbs down to the people calling me 'strange' - how am I supposed to know? I've never been pregnant before nor have I ever been close to anyone that has been pregnant. Once again, thank you and thumbs up to the nice repsonses! :)

Yeah its perfecally normal for women to check out hospitals before even getting pregnant....i work on the OB floor and I advise that you know your hospital and have a doctor that will be at that hospital and that you like...also personally i think that the best OB/GYN offices are in the hospital so that may help you also

I am sure hospitals have tours all the time--and yes your doc is affiliated with a certain hospital. It is pretty important for you to absolutely love your ob/gyn so ask other women who've had kids about their docs and the practice. You may be the only non-preg woman on the tour, but honestly maternity wards are open to visitors so you can just walk on in and take a look at the babies in the nursery behind the glass of course, and chat it up with some of the nurses. I did my tour during the childbirth classes which was about a month before my due date. It is more critical, I think, to be comfortable with your doc because you will be spending a lot of time with her/him. As long as the two hospitals are reputable you should be fine. Good luck!

I would call each hospital and inquire about a tour. They don't have to know you aren't pregnant - not that it should matter. I understand your concern. You are better off using an OB that is affiliated with the hospital you wish to deliver in.
Don't let the hospital be your only deciding factor on an OB though. I agree in checking out the hospitals, but a lot of your care comes from your OB. Make sure you get one that you feel comfortable with because you will be seeing a lot of him/her during your pregnancy.

as you say certain doc use a certain hospital
I am not sure if they will let you visit the maternity ward
if a hospital would let me walk in to take a look at their mat ward I would not want to have my baby there that mean any crazy woman can come with the pretense that the want to look for the future and actually walk away with my baby
but from past experience you are allow to visit 3 or 2 weeks before your due date

We toured the hospital when I was 34 weeks. I don't see why they wouldn't let you do it if you weren't pregnant though. I would call and find out!

Normally the tour is done when you are already pregnant. I don't see why you couldn't take the tour before you are pregnant. I certainly wouldn't pick out my Dr based on the hospital he/she delivers at.
Good luck!!

We toured the hospital at about 20 weeks but I don't see why they wouldn't let you do it whenever.

I think your very strange. Your getting quite ahead of yourself. You don't tour the hospital until the very late stages of pregnancy. I had my daughter at 36 weeks ( 3 weeks before my due date) and my hospital walk round was book for two weeks later. I didn't actually get to do a walk round. When you become pregnant its probably best to ask your midwife, she may be able to sort something out for you.
