I was disappointed too, and I am also a huge Johnny Cash fan. My problem with it was that it was just another biography film - make the cast black, change Joaquin Phoenix with Jamie Foxx, and you would essentially have, "Ray." Very few important differences between the two.
I didn't pick up on the "U-Turn" characterization, but you're right about that.
It was all a big excuse to capitalize on everyone knowing who Johnny Cash was because he'd died, and the papers reported that he died just months after his wife.

I agree, I was really looking forward to the film, but found it very disappointing. I've always liked Johnny Cash's music and Joaquin Phoenix is usually a good actor (and great looking!) so thought I'd love the film - it was too simple a portrait of a much deeper, complicated man.
The whole film stayed on the surface and didn't go deep enough into Cash's real character and life. I didn't like Phoenix's singing of Cash's songs much either, although he made a good attempt, it's hard to improve on the original.

I was really hyped when I heard about the movie coming out and then I rented it. It was very disappointing and my mom was a little upset by it and she grew up on Johnny Cash. There was more to his life then what they put in the movie. There's so much they could've done with the movie and I can't believe they didn't do more with it. People were looking for more out of it then seeing him on drugs; there was so much more going on.

I thought it was pretty good, but must admit that I'm not all that familiar with Johnny Cash's real life (even though I've met his son, John Carter Cash). The music was good, but I wish they had said what happened to his first wife Viviene! I didn't like her, but I would have liked to have known what happened to her. I assume she divorced him?
It was supposed to have been based on two books written by Johnny Cash, but you know what poetic license can do to a good novel, lol.

I was one of Johnny Cash's biggest fans. I thought the movie was good and Phoenix should have won an Oscar for it!

Perhaps the reason that some people didn't like the movie was that it concentrated on the first half of his life, before he became the man that many fans know. The movie didn't really go into the part of his life after he got off drugs and became more religious and socially aware. The movie concentrated more on his personal development and struggles. I think it gave you a picture of a man to be proud of, one who saw his faults and worked hard to overcome them. I do wish they'd have shown more of his life after this part of his life though.

I thought I was the only one who thought like you! I could not stand the boring, clueless and lifeless portrayal of Cash where he was a really interesting and charismatic man. I also thought some parts were pointless and just thrown in the movie just to make the movie longer.

My grandparents watched it and didn't like it. Having loved Johnny Cash, they felt the movie just didn't portray him exactly right. I'm 28 and have no interest in anything country so I couldn't have cared less when this movie came out. Even the previews looked stupid.
