The firewall that comes with Windows XP Prof., is not any good. It will only protect you againt rouge incoming traffice from rogue ports. A real firewall has to give you incoming/outgoing protection. As all of your own private data on your pc has to be protected from leaving your pc without your authorization.

You can only run one platform. If you go to setting shut down the Windows firewall or you can do it from the tray as you really can not use two firewalls.

I have used http://www.zonealarm Their free home for personal use version for over nine years an I am 100% satisfied with how zonealarm performs. (Always blocks all malware attempting to gain access). Plus the update frequent on an automatic basis. And they wil also advise you via automatic notice that there is a new version of zonealarm ready for download.

You do not have to remove the old version as the new version will also remove the old version. When they ask you if you want a clean install say yes, because it is safer then having the new version copy files that you gave prior authorization to allow.

Grant you that the extra authorizaton or deny is worth it. Because you will know for sure the new version has what you authorize to enter your pc and what you authorize to leave your pc.

I agree Zone Alarm. but, just a word of advice. Watch when you call in a problem to your internet provider help desk. make sure and turn off zone alarm, and reboot, then call your helpdesk. Problem may work then.. try that first, then when you make the call, tell them that your firewall is turned off, and yes you rebooted. Tech's HATE zonealarm. they had lots of problems with it not running the internet.
