Should you push the blade only forward on the stone only or draw it back only or both?

OK Either will work but generally pushing forward works faster and better. the right angle is 22deg it will seem like 20 really 25 to 15 you will be ok. one more thing what kind of stone do you have there are dry-stones,wet-stones (water) and oil-stones if your not sure use oil
also what are you trying to sharpen? Garden tool Kitchen knife pocket knife? One more thing most blades now days are stainless steel. so be patient it sharpens slow and doesn't hold an edge well.

Just make believe you are trying to slice a thin layer off the stone. Made sure you use a little oil on the stone. If you do that you will be pushing the blade in the right direction. After you have sharpened your blade use a honing stone to remove the burr.

you push foreward on it holding it at the right angle some stone kits come with a ramp already positioned at the right angle it helps you to get used to hitting exactly the right angle also make sure you use oil and i always use a fine stone they put a much nicer edge on the blade
