Do they send them to a landfill, store them or recycle them? The question came to my head when I was looking at all the Halloween costumes at the store.

They go on Clarence.
Then the left overs are stored.
Then after years of storage they are found again and the store has a side walk sale.

A lot of the clothing left over in stores (after going on many mark downs and spending time in their clearance outlet-Filene's Basement or Off 5th, for example) get "jobbed out"- that is, they are sold to discount retailers such as TJMaxx and Marshalls and go in "lots"- a predetermined amount. Those that are not in better condition or don't ultimately sell at the discount retailers go to places like Big Lots or Gabriel Bros. They are sold, typically, by the pound and could be anything. These outlets then sort through and price the items accordingly. There may be items that are perfectly fine, and others they sell as rags in bulk

The higher end designer items are sold to other shops who deal in reduced price designer items. The VERY high End no sells are sometimes donated to auctions or destroyed to prevent the value of the line dropping.
The labels like polo blue label are boxed up for next season, as are other "timeless" favorites, coats, sweaters, and the like.
Trendy items are sold to places like TJ MAX or other 2nd run outlets.
The only things that are bid on and shipped overseas are no sales form the bottom line end of the season sale at a 2nd or 3rd run store.
Most places do NOT donate these clothes..they sell them

As far as Haloween costumes go and as far as most clothes go, the stores mark them down to ridiuclously low prices and people wear them anyway or save them for the correct season.

Well if they are of Excellent quality then they are stored for the next season, of medium quality then recycled and if of low quality they are scrapped off and all exported to the 3rd world countries !

Alot of them are sold in vintage clothing stores. People pay big buck for things that people usually give away.
