what is the difference between engineered hurricane shutters and non-enginerred hurricane shutters?

Engineered shutters are guaranteed to withstand certain wind speeds ( ex. 80mph shutters or 100mph shutters. ) non-engineered are usually made in a local shop or homemade. might withstand a 50mph wind or 300mph wind, depends on who made them, but no guarantee of course.

I would assume the engineered shutters are designed to fit a particular type of window and have a guaranteed maximum wind speed resistance. Not so with the non-engineered.
