This is troubling. I do NOT believe it is sleep apnea as I do not have this after I fall asleep. This strange thing only occurs PRIOR to falling asleep...as I am starting to drift off to sleep. (I've had a sleep study done a few years ago but did not have (any) the night I had the sleep study. I do intend to repeat one though.)...what happens is as I fall asleep I feel this "clunk" like feeling in my brain and it JOLTS me "awake" even though I have not fallen asleep and I gasp for air. It is VERY TROUBLING. Some nights it happens only once....sometimes 5 or 6 times. I wondered if it was because my body was going into too deep of a sleep too fast for my brain? Sounds weird. My hubby and I nicknamed it "brain flips". Has anyone else had this? How did you stop it? Did they find out what this was? Again...I am in doubt that it is sleep apnea because once I fall asleep it does not happen.

I normally discourage people from avoiding sleep studies as I have sleep apnea and have gotten so much better since treatment! Now there are levels of sleep! one thru five and REM REM is the level of deep sleep where the brain really unwinds and the eyes move around rapidly! The eastern religions use this state as a level of meditation! Some people try to train themselves to meditate themselves into this state! Some people accidently just sometimes drop into this deep state!

Dropping into this state would be frightning if unexpected; although it would normally be expressed first as falling! Now if you are not doing this by pass of the stage of sleep you are really describing Sleep Apnea! Which is gasping for air!

I have really studied sleep apnea and tried to deny that I had it but I really did! Maybe you should just go down for a part night study again. Does your husband ever notice your stopping breathing during the night? You do not, nor will you ever know once you are asleep if you have apnea!

It is possible to by pass stages of sleep! Read about them! REM is when the body goes on automatic and breathing goes on the lower brain I call it auto pilot! IT is when the brain sleeps! All the other levels of sleep the body sleeps but at this level the brain actually rests! The upper Brain!

This is the most important type of sleep for our brain to get! Lack of this type of sleep can cause depression, stress on the heart and all sorts of things OH YES DEATH!

Well, it could be a form of sleep apnea. The "choking" sensation is pretty common for the disorder. You could have a low grade version of it. My brother had severe sleep apnea...he would wake with that feeling several times a night. They told him the reason he felt like he was choking is because his tongue and throat muscles relax too much causing his tongue to block his airway. Then off course stop breathing temporarily. He has now being treated with breathing mask that basically forces air down his airways to prevent the "relaxing" of his tongue and throat.

The "clunk" feeling may be your brains way of waking you up.
I know it must be pretty scary and there are several causes for the disorder. Good luck and don't give up!

It might be "lucid dreaming". That falling factor (and the voices) has occurred to me earlier than. Lucid dreaming is whilst your at the borderline of slumbering. In lamens phrases.. your part conscious, part asleep. Sometimes, for the duration of this state we will begin to dream early.. inflicting sensations, audio and usually even visible hallucinations. Look it up on wikipedia and notice if their description applies to you. But i am lovely definite thats all it's. Try taking a small dose of Nyquil earlier than mattress, or a slumbering tablet to aid you go to sleep quicker.. that could helped. Or you might do just what I did to lead them to give up, and that was once simply drink lots of water and move to mattress an hour previous.

I get this same thing. As im starting to fall asleep I suddenly wake up with a weird jerk feeling. Then ill start to doze off and i get it again. Not sure whats going on.
