Darkshadow is correct. If this is your first time, you might try tampons that have a smooth applicator. Alittle petroleum jelly at the tip and side may help inserting til your comfortable. You really shouldn't feel the tampon inside you. If it's inserted correctly only the string will be left outside your body. It takes practice, eventually it will be so easy, you may or may not bend your knees. But Darkshadow explanation of the best way in the beginning leads to the tampon being inserted up inside and not protruding or causing irritation. As with all female hygiene products, don't leave them in all day. Make sure your hands are really clean, to avoid any infections.

Standing slightly bend at the knees and insert. Or stand with one leg on the toilet and the other slightly bent at the knee then insert.
