Purchase a copy of "The Big Book of Logos" by David E. Carter. He does not provide any rules as such, but he does give you pointers in what looks moving and how to use common computer software to create effective brand logos.

Designing a logo is not small beer. So much of your identity is going to be wrapped up in logo creation that you cannot afford to miss even the slightest amount. Take your time, work carefully, be precise.

You might want to learn a little bit about the late Paul Rand http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Rand who was one of the most influential logo designers of the twentieth century. He realized that brand image was best conveyed with logos that could last a long time and not be overwhelmed by changes in fashion. He created simple designs based on clear geometric forms, some of which were used for over half a century. You will certainly recognize his classic logos for UPS, Cummins Diesel, IBM, and the ABC television network. Rand also designed the notorious "Crooked E" logo for Enron.

Also check out http://www.monochrom.at/markenzeichnen/index-eng.htm before you start designing. This web site drives home the impact of clear, effective logo design. And because logo design is a very important graphic design issue, don't stint on buying graphic design books—a good logo design can be a gift of the gods, and a bad logo design can haunt you to the grave.

Keep it clean, uncluttered and simple. This is a good article...
