What does this The Department of Trade and Industry?

Can someone explain briefly what they do. I no they help businesses and that but not sure exactly what they do.

It promotes international trade (especially exports) e.g by running expo fairs overseas. It pays subsidies to ailing businesses like Rover Cars when politicians tell it to. It regulates business.
