A crisis of meaning is typically a perspective on life that neglects the ultimate search for the meaning or "Truth" of life. Atheists are often accused of a crisis of meaning - but it really isn't true. Religious leaders have attempted to monopolize the concept of meaning solely in spiritual terms. Pope John Paul II used this phrase often.

However, existentialists such as Sartre also underwent crises of meaning when they failed to find any underlying organization or meaning within the universe. Philosophers who conclude that "things just happen for no reason" can be said to be undergoing a crisis of meaning. No rational explanation for the world and human life ever seems evident.
